Sjef Voets doesn't have a strong preference for one material over another. With the help of the right technique, it must be possible to incorporate the things he's seen, heard, read or experienced into a given material. The idea he has is directed into the material, while the changes he makes to the material are directed back to an idea. He tests out his ideas and materials, to see if they project the expressiveness that he demands from a sculpture.
His sculptures are an outgrowth of his personality but in the sculpture's final form he wants that emotional quality to transcend the strictly personal elements. In that sense a good sculpture no longer needs his creator. Only then a work of his does become an autonomous object.
